ALLERGY STATISTICS UK
There are 150 Million allergy sufferers across Europe, making it the most common chronic disease. By 2025, asthma will represent the most prevalent chronic childhood disease and result in one of the highest causes of health care costs.
In the last decade, the cases of food allergies have doubled and the number of hospitalisations caused by severe allergic reactions has increased 7-fold!
Many of those who die or suffer ‘near miss’ reactions had no idea that they were at risk. Those who are aware of the risk can find the day-to-day unpredictability of living with food allergy risks stressful.
People suffering severe reactions need emergency expert help from a trained paramedic, usually with injectable adrenaline. In the UK, about ten people die every year from food-induced anaphylaxis.
UK hospital admissions for food allergies have increased by 500% since 1990. 50% of children and young people have one or more allergy within the first 18 years of life.
£900million per annum is spent by Primary Care, due to allergy and £68million per annum is the cost of hospital admissions due to allergy.
